Labour Conference 2025: The top environmental events to catch in Liverpool  

The scene is set for this year’s Labour Party conference, taking place from Sunday 28th September – Wednesday 1st October in Liverpool.  

The Seahorse team have curated the top environmental events that attendees can’t afford to miss. From overfishing to clean heat, this year’s programme is brimming with the most pressing environmental topics of the day. Find the full agenda here.

Alongside high-profile sessions with senior Labour politicians, there are plentiful networking receptions and debates inside and outside of the secure zone. Below, we’ve highlighted the key events that will set the green agenda on Merseyside.    

Sunday 28th September 

FARMING 

15:45-16:45. Rural Renewal: Fortifying our Farmers. Join LCEF to explore British farming’s role in the government’s agenda, progress so far, and future vision. They'll discuss how to boost resilience for farmers and supply chains - and the transformative role of the private sector.

17:00-17:45, Climate Consensus Past, Present and Future: In Conversation with Ed Miliband [RSVP only]. Hosted by Labour Climate and Environment Forum. Featuring Ed Miliband MP. Thirty years ago, the UN held its very first climate COP, and Ed Miliband was a young advisor to then Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown. Join LCEF in conversation with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband for a look back at three decades of climate and Labour politics, and a look ahead to what comes next.

NATURE 

18:30-19:30, Nature-led Economic Growth: How Growing the Sustainable Blue Economy is a Win-Win-Win for Marine Recovery, Economic Growth and Coastal Communities. Hosted by Marine Conservation Society. Featuring Alison Hume MP, Zurich, Marine Conservation Society, and Oyster Heaven. As the Labour Government develops its agenda for national transformation, this event will explore how investing in healthy seas can support coastal communities, climate resilience, nature recovery, and long-term economic prosperity across the UK.

20:00-21:30, The SERA Rally: Fighting for Clean Energy and Nature. After a year of real progress under Labour, the fight for Clean Energy and Nature is only beginning. CLEAN AIR 

10:00-11:00, Clean Air Justice: Time for Labour to Lead. Fabian Society and Healthy Air Coalition. Air pollution is a public health crisis, with deprived communities hit the hardest. What bold actions can policymakers take on transport, tobacco, and clean air legislation to protect our lungs and our NHS?  

CIRCULAR ECONOMY 

13:30-14:30, From Rubbish To Resource: How Labour Can End the Throwaway Society and Create a Circular Economy. Hosted by circular economy non-profit Reloop, this panel will explore how cleaning up our communities and keeping valuable resources in circulation are essential both to protecting the environment and to driving economic growth. The panel will feature: Chair: Nada Farhoud, Environment Editor, Daily Mirror; James Asser MP, Chair of the Tidy Britain APPG; Sarah Horner, UK and Ireland Director, Reloop; Stuart Hayward-Higham, Chief Technical Development & Innovation officer and Member of the Government’s Circular Economy Taskforce; and Giles Bristow, CEO, Surfers Against Sewage. The discussion will highlight how Labour can help build a truly circular economy.

ENERGY 

13:30-14:30, Powering Change, Labour’s vision for energy transition and economic growth. LCEF and Scottish Power. Join LCEF and Scottish Power for a discussion on how government, industry and trade unions work together to ensure that Labour’s growth-focused clean energy mission supports workers, jobs and communities in a changing industrial landscape.

NATURE 

15:30-17:30, A Wave Of Change: Building Towards A Labour Vision For Protecting The Ocean – and Oceana/LSEN drinks. Join Oceana UK and leading voices to discuss how political campaigning can deliver meaningful new protections for UK seas. Watch footage of the problems facing the ocean, its capacity to bounce back, and explore how we can build momentum behind Labour’s agenda to protect seas, communities and wildlife. The panel will feature Steph Spyro, Environment Editor, Daily Express (chair); Alec Taylor, Director of Policy and Research, Oceana UK; Katie White MP, DESNZ Minister and MP for Leeds North West; and Toby Perkins MP, Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee and MP for Chesterfield 

This will be followed by informal drinks with the Labour Staffers Environmental Network (LSEN) from 4:30-5:30pm, with remarks from Marine Minister Emma Hardy MP.

ENERGY 

16:30, Is Labour’s Clean Power Mission on Track? Institute for Government, Energy UK and SSE. This discussion about Labour’s vital mission to deliver clean power by 2030, will feature what are sure to be interesting insights from Michael Shanks MP, Minister for Energy; Sam Alvis Head of Energy Security and Environment, IPPR; Sam Peacock, Managing Director of Corporate Affairs, Regulation and Strategy, SSE; and Dhara Vyas, Chief Executive Officer, Energy UK.

Tuesday 30th September 

NATURE 

08:00-09:30, Dip at the Docks. Hosted by Surfers Against Sewage, Swim England and Paddle UK. Start the final day of conference with a bracing swim in the docks organised by environmental and sport groups. The swim in Queens Dock will see conference attendees and local communities celebrate the importance of protecting our seas and rivers and the benefits these bring to people across the UK.

ENERGY 

Event: 09:00-10:15, Protecting Progress: How to Win the Argument on Net Zero in a Populist Era? Hosted by IPPR and EnBW. Featuring Katie White MP (Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero, invited), Steve Akehurst (Director, Persuasion UK), Megan Corton Scott (Deputy Director, Labour Climate and Environment Forum), Damien Zachlod (Managing Director, EnBW)

CLIMATE AND NATURE 

12:15-13:15, Things Can Only Get Hotter: Is Ambition on Climate and Nature a Route for Electoral Success? Hosted by WWF and More In Common. This event will explore the politics behind the government’s approach to climate and nature. It will explore what voters want and how slower environmental action could threaten Labour’s coalition. With insights from More in Common and Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies MS (invited) this panel will discuss the stakes and choices ahead.

14:00-16:00, PM Speech Screening. Hosted by Seahorse Environmental, join us as we gather to watch Keir Starmer deliver his keynote address at party conference. Starmer will set out his vision for the year ahead, including the party’s priorities and key messages that he wants to resonate with votes, businesses and within his own party. The screening will be an opportunity to reflect on the policy signals and discuss what Starmer’s agenda could mean for environmental ambition and the wider political landscape.

NETWORKING 

19:00-20:30, Green Groups Reception. Hosted by eNGOs. A chance to join senior Labour figures and come together as environmentalists to celebrate the environmental wins Labour has already had in government and to discuss the future.
