Liberal Democrat Conference 2025: The top environmental events 

With conference season in full swing, Seahorse is continuing the annual tradition of mapping out the must-see environmental events across the three biggest parties’ conferences. The Liberal Democrats gather in Bournemouth 20-23 September, and, unlike Labour or Conservative conference, Liberal Democrat members have the unique opportunity to debate and vote on motions that can become official party policy. 

This year’s agenda is packed with environmental events and networking opportunities, and Seahorse has highlighted the standout green sessions below. Whilst the Lib Dem Climate and Nature Day takes place on Sunday 21st, there are environmental events throughout conference and you can explore the full agenda here. 

Sunday 21st September  (Climate and Nature Day) 

Event: 10:00-12:00, Join Marine Conservation Society and Rewilding Britain for a Beach Clean & Comb. Take advantage of the coastal setting by joining this hands-on activity to support marine health and biodiversity by keeping our beaches clean. 

Venue: the beach outside Bournemouth ICC 

Event: 11:30-12:30, Green Foundations: Where Next for the Liberal Democrats on Climate and Nature. Hosted by WWF and More in Common, this panel event will feature Alastair Carmichael MP, Pippa Heylings MP and Baroness Sheehan and explore how the Liberal Democrats can build on their green platform to explore what’s next for the environment and how they can balance ambitious climate commitments without sidelining local environmental concerns. 

Venue: Sandbanks Suite, Marriott Hotel 

Event: 11:30-12:30, Schools Leading the Net Zero Transition. Join Teach the Future as they take stock of how schools are progressing towards net zero – both in infrastructure and the curriculum. Featuring Wera Hobhouse MP, this panel will explore the critical role of embedding sustainability across education and retrofitting schools to met net zero goals.

Event: 13:00-14:00, Join CHEM Trust for their event on Turning Over a Green Leaf: How Closer UK-EU collaboration would benefit the environment. With UK rivers among the most polluted in Europe and growing concern over PFAS ‘forever chemicals,’ this session will explore how a reset in UK-EU relations could strengthen environmental protections, boost public health, and benefit trade and security.

Event: 13:00-14:00, Healthy Food, Healthy Future: a Liberal Democrat Plan for Diet and Obesity. Nesta’s healthy life mission and Recipe for Change will be hosting a private roundtable, this discussion will bring together a group of policy experts and parliamentarians to explore how the Liberal Democrats will be engaging with the policies on food, diet and obesity set out in the Government’s 10-Year Health Plan and the National Food Strategy.

Event: 18:15-19:15, How to Prevent Harmful Advertising to Safeguard Public Health and the Environment. Hosted by Adfree Cities and Badvertising, this session will explore how restricting harmful advertising can help protect public health, restore nature and clean up our air. With councils such as Edinburgh and Sheffield already introducing ethical and low-carbon advertising and sponsorship policies, the discussion will consider how the Liberal Democrats can support this growing momentum both locally and nationally.

Event: 18:15-19:15, Catalysing the Transition to Low-Carbon Heat in Homes. Join Nesta as they discuss one of the UK’s biggest net zero challenges – decarbonising home heating. With large-scale uptake dependent on significant policy shifts, Nesta and a panel of experts will explore the key policies needed to make this transition a success.

Event: 19:45-21:00, Green Groups Reception. To wrap up Climate and Nature Day, Green Alliance will host a Green Groups Reception - an opportunity for like-minded environmental advocates to come together, connect, and reflect on the conference so far.

Monday 22nd September 

Event: 11:30–12:30, Delivering a fair transition for the North Sea: How the Liberal Democrats can champion climate, communities and quality jobs. Hosted by Uplift, this panel event will feature contributions by Liberal Democrat MPs – including Pippa Heylings and Alistair Carmichael - alongside energy experts and civil society to discuss how a fair transition away from fossil fuels can create jobs, deliver tangible benefits for local communities, and demonstrate climate leadership 

Venue: Yeovil Room, Highcliff Marriott Hotel 

Event: 18:15–19:15 – How Can the UK Be a Global Leader in Marine Policy and Protection? Join the Marine Conservation Society and National Oceanography Centre to explore how vital our ocean is in supporting biodiversity, sustaining coastal communities, and helping to tackle the climate crisis. Featuring Roz Savage MP, the panel will discuss how the UK can strengthen its global leadership through informed policy and closer collaboration with the marine science community to better protect and restore our ocean.
