Raising the profile of fermented food
Good Food Institute Europe
We were delighted to partner with Seahorse Environmental to deliver our Food Fermentation Fair in the Houses of Parliament. Seahorse's strong experience in supporting not-for-profit organisations and delivering impactful parliamentary events was compelling in our decision to work with them. The team were diligent, flexible and always one step ahead, enabling us to host the event with minimal challenges and maximum impact.

Context
Fermented food remains a relatively niche area within the broader food policy landscape, often overlooked in discussions about sustainable food systems and innovation. Recognising its growing scientific and commercial potential, as well as its role in addressing public health, environmental sustainability, and food security, GFI Europe was keen to highlight its potential for achieving our growth, climate and health goals. The goal was to increase awareness and credibility of the sector among policymakers by putting it firmly on the parliamentary agenda.
Our activity
Seahorse partnered with the Good Food Institute (GFI) to raise the profile of fermented food in Parliament through a high-impact event designed to engage policymakers, civil servants, and industry leaders. Working closely with GFI, Seahorse brought together 14 partner organisations, each hosting a stand to showcase the latest advancements in food fermentation science and innovation.
To ensure fermented food could be served at the event, Seahorse liaised with the Parliamentary Estate and offsite security to secure the necessary approvals. We also provided guidance and support to partners unfamiliar with the parliamentary setting to ensure they were well-prepared and confident.
Additionally, we secured Mike Reader MP, Chair of the Food and Drink APPG, to host the event and provided a comprehensive briefing on developments in fermented food. This helped ensure the topic would be considered in future discussions within the APPG.
Styled as a ‘Fermented Food Fair’, the event offered attendees the chance to sample innovative fermented products and hear insights from leading voices across industry and academia
Our impact
With strong cross-party attendance, the event clearly demonstrated how fermentation technology can support a range of key policy priorities, including food security, public health, net zero ambitions, and economic growth. Through direct engagement and hands-on experiences, the event successfully positioned fermentation as a vital, forward-looking solution within the future of food and sustainability policy.
Following the event, the Seahorse team facilitated a series of follow-ups to continue the important conversations sparked on the day and to maintain momentum around the role of fermentation in the National Food Strategy
